Stephen Harper is celebrating his 53rd birthday Monday.

His wife, Laureen Harper, came by the office and presented the prime minister with a cake, according to Harper's spokesperson.

Harper was 46 when he became Canada's 22nd leader. That puts him among some of the youngest prime ministers Canada has ever elected.

Joe Clark remains the youngest ever prime minister at age 39, he's followed by Brian Mulroney at 45. Kim Campbell was the same age as Harper when she briefly became prime minister in 1993.

The oldest person ever to become prime minister was Sir Charles Tupper, who was elected at age 74 in 1896.

In honour of Harper's big day, here's a look at how old our former PMs were when they landed the top job.

The birth of a banana republic

Under Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives, committees have become highly polarized and hyper-partisan. Shockingly for a democracy, they now operate mostly in secret, away from the electorate's prying eyes.

A secret democracy isn't a democracy.

It doesn’t take long for a healthy democracy to shift into an autocratic state, with a strong centralized power passing laws in the interest of a very narrow group of people, leaving the majority to accept the new reality or face persecution for speaking out against the abuses of power.

Thankfully, Canada is still a democracy and up until recently, I would have characterized our country as having a healthy democracy.

But this is quickly changing.

Our prime minister, even though he is the head of a minority government, has used every lever of power at his disposal to centralize his power, silence his detractors, and render the Parliamentary process ineffective.

Harper’s CON Reform Party have been caught up in many shady activities since coming to power. The revelation they are behind a robocall operation to suppress voting for opposition parties would rank among the more serious offences.

In giving or not giving the benefit of the doubt on matters like these, the question of the track record figures prominently.

To the misfortune of Team Harper, its record on duplicitous activities is hardly one to inspire confidence.

Where is the picture of the cake!

I hope the icing wasn't in the official colors of the ND Party.

I hope the candles weren't arranged in the form of a swastika.

And having his birthday on the day that the Big Canadian Banks were found out that they got "BAILED OUT" in 2008, it would have been appropriate for someone to dump the cake right on top of his "coiffed hair" for all the lies Harpo dished to the Canadian population over the last 4 years!

It may be the PM's 53rd birthday, but I believe he is definitely past his "best before date".

"His wife, Laureen Harper, came by the office and presented the prime minister with a cake, according to Harper's spokesperson." I guess bringing out the cake at home, like most people would do, wouldn't have been photo-opportunistic enough.

Hopefully, Harper will gain wisdom with getting older. At least, that is what we expect...
Question is: what will he do with his new found wisdom? Judging from the past few years, NOTHING !!! Assuming he ever had true wisdom and that he would deem it a useful quality...
