Ottawa police shot and killed a stray horse that wandered to a rural south Ottawa intersection.

Police say a vehicle struck the horse while travelling through fog at about 80 km/h at Rideau Road and Bank Street.

Paramedics said the driver was not injured but the horse was in severe pain. Police found the animal's owner by the horse's identification tattoo.

The owner told police they could put the horse down due to the severity of its injuries.
