Star Reporter Denies Peering Into Rob Ford's Yard

CBC  |  Posted: 05/03/2012 7:28 pm Updated: 05/04/2012 1:24 pm

Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale said Thursday he did not stand on cinder blocks and peer over Mayor Rob Ford’s back fence in an attempt to take photographs of his house.

Speaking Thursday afternoon for the first time since a bizarre confrontation with the mayor near Ford’s house on Wednesday, Dale said he was on public land to research a story.

Ford has said Dale stood on a pair of cinder blocks located beyond his back fence while snapping photos of his house. Dale denied this Thursday.

“I never saw cinder blocks on this public parcel of land,” Dale said. “I do not have the agility to balance on such cinder blocks. I certainly did not try,” he said. "I never peered over the fence. I never made an attempt to look over the fence."

Dale wrote a story published on the Star’s website Wednesday about the mayor’s application to purchase a piece of wooded land owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and located near Ford’s house. Ford has said he wanted to purchase the land for security reasons.

'I felt I was in danger,' reporter says

Dale said his visit to the property was needed to conduct research related to his story.

“I thought that I would be a diligent journalist and go and see where this property was, what it looked like,” Dale told reporters on Thursday. “My other question was what type of fencing the mayor and his family have around their house because in their letter to the [conservation authority], they had said the reasons they need to buy this land… was that it would allow them to build a better security fence.”

Dale said he did take some photos of the back of Ford's house with his BlackBerry, but said they were taken from a distance. Dale pointed out that he is a reporter, not a photographer, and that the pictures were part of research for his story.

"I had no interest in talking to the mayor or his family," Dale said. "I wanted to see this plot of trees and grass, see a fence and get out of there."

At some point, Ford was alerted to Dale's presence behind his house and confronted him. Dale said Ford blocked his exit route from the backyard while confronting him in an aggressive manner.

“I was trying to side-step him and get away," Dale said Thursday. "Every time I did, he would go the same way as me. I was trying my hardest to leave. All I wanted to do was get out of there. Someone much larger than me came at me with a raised fist. I felt I was in danger.”

"I am not ashamed to say that I did yell for help repeatedly," Dale said.

Dale said he is uncomfortable about becoming the centre of a news story while trying to research one but said he did nothing wrong and did not trespass on Ford’s property.

“I just want to cover the mayor and write fair stories about the mayor,” he said. "It’s been a crazy couple of days.”

He also said he doesn’t think Ford’s public statements about the incident have been “accurate or honest.”

I knew this would keep getting better!
According to this article: http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1174091--rob-ford-talked-of-tearing-down-house-contrary-to-agent-s-comments-at-hearing-on-bid-to-buy-parkette

In July 15, 2010 Rob Ford stated that in a few years he wanted to tear down his house and build a bigger one! No wonder he wants that land! Thanks Daniel Dale and The Star for bring this to the taxpayers attention! The fight goes on!

Did anyone else see the news footage of the swarm of reporters standing outside of Conrad Black's home? They were all there, plain as day, peering over his fence into his yard. I was shocked I tell you. Shocked.

I am thinking the time between Ford taking possession of the phone and using it was because he was charging it on his own charger!? I can see how Ford being the control freak he is would charge it so he could view the photos Dale took.
Ford ruined any chance of Dale being charged for anything when he 'broke the chain of evidence'. Ford could have easily deleted all the innocent photos and left any 'questionable' photos. What gave Ford the right to use Dales phone anyway? The man is a menace to society!

Good points.

Hopefully Ford will understand there are rapidly diminishing returns for him on this matter. The longer it goes on; the more his already tarnished image suffers.

He did and he did not, he should and he should have not...at this point it has become immaterial. The Star reporter's behaviour may be offensive (or not depending to whom you listen and believe) but it's not unusual nor bizarre. How many polite Star reporters do you know? But I digress. The fact of the matter is the whole world now sees an overweight mayor who behaves in a most un-Canadian manner. Whether he was justified in being aggressive with perceived intruders or not, we all now see him a big bully and buffoonish in his PR image. Point finale. And this means, an embarassment for Toronto, and Canada. Mayor Ford...time to get out of the limelight and stop overheating yourself unnecessarily...I mean, what's the point? You've lost the image war.

I love the irony of this whole thing. Ford wants to purchase a parcel of crown land to build a security fence. Can you blame him?

Michael Cooke is trying to turn the Star into a tabloid paper like the Chicago Sun Times or the New York Daily News where he came from. Nice move John Honderich.

The Star is completely obsessed with this ridiculous "story". Award winning papparazo Reporter Daniel Dale needs to find news to report on where he won;t run away screaming from an unarmed man.

First of all, it is not Crown land, it is Toronto Conservation Authority land. It belongs to the taxpayers of Toronto. What is stopping him from putting a new security fence on his existing property? Because, he is king of the land and wants more for his fiefdom!
Ford opened up this can of worms by applying to purchase the the small parcel of land, which by the way only happens a couple of times a year!

He quite rightly ran away from an angry red faced 300 plus pound man who was threatening to beat him. I would run too

The Toronto Star reporter was only do what any award winning jounalist would be doing - following up on an important story and taking pictures with his cell phone at 7:30pm behind the Mayors house..

Here's a thought. Go before a JP and swear out a complaint for assault.

Ford loves to throw around accusations of imaginary offenses like trespassing. Let him stand accused of the offense he appears to have committed. Maybe it might cure his intemperate behaviour -- but probably not.

What nonsense. Why? Because its so difficult to believe that the local paper would want to know what land he was trying to get the City to sell him?

What does it even say about the character of Ford if people could so readily believe that he would be easily baited by a reporter on public property neighbouring his house? If it only confirms that he is paranoid and aggressive, then it really wouldn't even matter if they had baited him -- he is unfit to serve and is a dangerous bully.

Does anyone else feel like this whole story has too much smoke for the amount of fire involved?

Ford's right-wing buddies in Ottawa are doing real damage to Canada at this very moment by pushing their corporate-driven agenda through Parliament by force of their so-called majority.

Ford's infantile antics could never pose any sort of threat to Canada, but his current tantrum/clown-show manages to dominate news cycles.

Harper is probably relieved that this tempest in a sandbox is taking the spotlight off his government.
12:50 PM on 05/04/2012
But there maybe more fire than smoke here. Why is Ford so angry? Is his application for buying public park land a lie for instance? He claims it is for security but he already had a large fence around his house.I think he is angry because the Star is looking into his buying the land not for the trespassing he claims he is angry about. What I have read this morning is that Ford himself may have committed a criminal act in demanding the reporters cell phone and tape recorder.

what is it that folks have that causes them to read something and then completly get it wrong?????........IT WAS NOT AT NIGHT AND IT WAS NOT ON PRIVATE PROPERTY...
10:03 AM on 05/04/2012
whether it is public or private land is immaterial. The Ontario Press Council has examples of guidelines for the press to follow on their website.

On the subject of photographs, one guideline states quite clearly ". Note-private places are public or private property where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. "
11:06 AM on 05/04/2012
So I can't take a picture of say, a beautiful tree in a park if there are houses in the background since the people in those houses have a "reasonable expectation of privacy"?

Sounds to me like your grabbing at straws trying to justify Ford's behavior. I'm not buying it.

so where is that surveilance video.....or right.he won't release it...and the police have laid no charges.....the WHOLE point of this is that Ford is trying to get that Public land.....Reporter was doing his job..............
01:25 PM on 05/04/2012
Did you read the article?
Since when is 7:30 pm not at night? Because there is daylight? Many kids are in bed by then. That's like saying midnight in Tromso Norway is not night because the sun is still out.

PRIVATE PROPERTY OR NOT if you saw some unknown person is scoping out the perimeter of YOUR property... YOU would be pissed too.

Right or wrong, Rob Ford handled this badly! Verbally assaulting a reporter on public land just feeds into his already negative image as an impulsive, dim-witted thug of a person. De-amalgamate now and take Rob Ford with you!
10:06 AM on 05/04/2012
Rob Ford handled this fine! He and his family have been subject to death threats. He was totally justified when notified of a strange person peering into his property to confront him, and not knowing who it was, was quite justified in acting aggressively (or defensively). Even after being told the person was a reporter, he doesn't know it';s true. I have no problems with ford's handling of the problem -- it was the Star that had the problem.

Ford and Dale both stated that they knew and recognized each other.

If you disagree; you'll have to convince them.
11:11 AM on 05/04/2012
Yeah, the Star does have a nasty problem....of calling out Ford on his crap. I can see why that would frustrate Ford and his supporters.
08:46 AM on 05/04/2012
The fact that he called the police before when an old reporter came to his door one morning, yelling at 911 operator because he wants to cut police budget but wants them to come at his whistle, publicly ignoring and bashing the TOStar...I'd say Rob Ford does not have any credibility! The man is a liar! Watch his TV interview!!

I walk around our house in my underwear. And my wife says, "Close the drapes. Someone might see you." I say, "I don't care. It's my house. Let them look if they want."

Which brings me around to Mr. Ford. I just can't imagine anyone wanting to see him in his underwear or worse, nudie. I would certainly be looking the other way at all times; looking at the public property he wants to buy so he can expand his security perimeter
