A Lévis, Que., man was charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence in the death of a toddler Friday.
Nicolas Lacroix was charged in connection the shooting death on Thursday of a two-year-old boy at a home on the south shore of Quebec City.
Police said the boy may have been the victim of an accidental shooting.
The mother of the boy called 911 at around 6:30 p.m. ET Thursday and emergency crews were dispatched to a Foisy Street home.
“At the scene, a child of two years old, reached by firemen, was found dead,” said Sgt. Claude Denis of the provincial police.
The child’s mother and a man found at the scene were taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
The woman was released, but the man was placed under arrest.
“When his condition will be better, police officers with the major crime unit of the Sûreté will meet to try and understand what happened exactly,” Denis said.
An autopsy will be performed on the child in Montreal.
Lévis is located across the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City.
