Environmental Review Reform: David Suzuki Foundation, Greenpeace, Others Blast Tories For 'War On Nature'

TORONTO - Canadian conservation groups have launched an anti-budget campaign condemning federal changes that they say will weaken the country's environmental safeguards.

Organizations including the David Suzuki Foundation, Greenpeace and Equiterre have banded together to oppose what they call a Conservative attack on nature and democracy.

In a series of ads today, they're calling on Canadians to black out their websites on June 4 to voice their disapproval for the omnibus federal budget bill that contains sweeping environmental provisions.

They hope individual Canadians and organizations will alter their websites in ways like making their home pages black.

Rick Smith, executive director for Environmental Defence, says the measures have been "shoehorned" into the budget bill in order to avoid debate.

He says the changes will limit Canadians' ability to engage in the public policy process.

"We're very concerned that the federal government is conducting, essentially, a war on nature and democracy," he says.

Under the new federal plan, the government would have 45 days to decide if an assessment is needed for major economic projects.

If so, the review would take a maximum of two years.

Other changes include recognizing provincial assessments if they meet federal standards.

They would also cut the number of agencies responsible for reviews to three, down from 40.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver has said the new rules will prevent long delays in project approvals that threaten job-creation and hamper the economy.

The groups are also concerned about a crackdown on charities that they say aims to silencing them.

More like a war on the future. Instead of wreaking the economy by the reckless acceleration of oil extraction, they should leave more of it in the ground for future generations. This will also help ensure a higher price per barrel.

...now let's look at the big picture of these environmental groups... Greenpeace, once a true grass roots environmental movement, has become a large corporate entity based in The Netherlands essentially run by lawyers and accountants... all drawing big wages... actually close to 50% of monies raised ... their funding model is to prey on the average citizen throughout the free world with their 'sky is falling' rhetoric in order to derive donations... Suzuki Foundation, not much different ... it's all driven by money, not saving the world!

Voicing support up for the protection of our planet -- clean air, land and water -- is considered political? That's a weird view.

Me? I tend to trust scientists over politicians when it comes to science.

Harper looks to the U.S. Conservative Party for policy inspiration -- how to make hay for the plutocrats at the longterm expense of the electorate.

It's about time!!!! The Cons are destroying the environment, or should I say planning on destroying it. The time for everyone to push back is now!!! I wish them success and they can count on my active support in both time and money.

Just wondering if you plan to focus your time and money to fight against Bill 55 that was hidden from public scruitiny in the recent Ontario budget. If you don't know about Bill 55 then I suggest you become knowledgable and I look forward to you joining us in our fight here in Ont.

Hi! I'm an Albertan and frankly don't know about Bill 55. I'll do some research. My primary focus is the lousy federal government plaguing the majority of Canadians while pandering to: a).multinational corporations, b). the Koch brothers, c). Canadian fascists, and d). scared Canadians who they continue to scare.

Harper and his CONs are waging war not only on Canadians who live now, but also future generations. Why are such crimes permitted?

Yep. Someone will benefit greatly.

That money will be able to buy them clean water and pure air for only so long though.

Time will prove these politicians as the unworthy stewards that they are. It's a terrible example to the youth of this nation to have such deceitful and backward thinking in Ottawa. Our democracy and our natural environment are at stake.

I am reminded of Ayn Rand’s infamous hatred (or fear?) of nature: “The ecologists are the new vultures swarming to extinguish that [Promethean] fire [of capitalist technology]... Nature-loving hoodlums [and] anti-technology crusaders are ignorant of man’s [vulnerable] condition in the midst of an unconquered nature.” [Rand, The New Left, 1975] If, as with Rand, the EGO is the basis of all meaning and purpose, CONTROL becomes the ultimate 'rationality', and spontaneity -- as symbolized by 'nature' -- the ultimate enemy.

can you not take them to court over it? Didn't they break some of the rules?

It is good news that these groups are starting to fight back. I support them in their efforts to expose the lies that come from the government in Ottawa. The conservatives spew innuendo but never provide the facts to back it up. This government should represent all citizens, not, just the ones with money.

If you recklessly play with money and crash the financial system then your friends in politics can use taxpayer's money to bail you out. If you play with the environment and crash the ecological system then there is no one who can bail you out.

It is much to environmental groups' advantage to insist on industry having to run their proposals past a long series of bureaucracies and hearings which the groups can filibuster and which can be dragged on endlessly. I'm sure many projects are shelved rather than go through such a wasteful, expensive, and frustrating process.

But that doesn't mean it's a good system, or that the environment is any safer for it.

Similar to the use of the term "tipping point", use of the term "War on..." has reached the tipping point.
