Two People Struck And Killed On Highway 407

Two people were killed Monday afternoon after being struck by a car on the westbound Highway 407 at Yonge Street.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford told CBC News that it appears that a vehicle became disabled and two occupants — a man and a woman — decided to get out, possibly to change a flat tire.

They were then hit by a pickup truck.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the OPP. The other pedestrian was pronounced dead at hospital. Two other people who stayed in the vehicle survived the crash.

Police say the victims are from outside of Canada and were visiting family in Ontario.

The driver, meanwhile, was taken to hospital to receive treatment for what appear to be minor injuries.

The OPP are reminding drivers and passengers that they should stay in their car if it breaks down and to wait for police assistance.

“We tell people time and time again: Stay in your vehicle if you become disabled for whatever reason, stay in your vehicle at all times and wait for emergency vehicles to arrive,” Woodford said.

The westbound lanes of the highway reopened at Bayview Avenue Monday around 4 p.m. after being closed for the entire afternoon.

IMHO the 407 is a very dangerous highway and the province ought never to have allowed a private company to own or manage such a conveyance. I strongly advocate the immediate "nationalization" of this highway by the province and that it be closed until such time as it can be improved to provincial standards. I also advocated the jailing and charging of the highway's Spanish owners and manager for criminal liability in these deaths and a civil lawsuit against the parent company of the 407 ETR.

I drive between Kitchener and Brampton every night and despise that the 407 is a toll road. What a useless concept in Canada.

Why the heck should the owners be held criminally liable for this accident? The occupants stopped in a live lane, exited the vehicle and stood at the front of their vehicle. The pick up truck then rear ended the stopped vehicle.

There isn't sufficient clearance, IMHO, anywhere on that highway to pull off safely if needed, nor to avoid a car stopped dead in a live lane.
