3 Girls Inhaling Propane Burned In Explosion

CBC  |  Posted: 05/08/2012 3:21 pm Updated: 05/08/2012 7:30 pm

Three girls are recovering from burns following a propane explosion — and, according to the RCMP, it happened after one of them lit a cigarette while they were inhaling the flammable gas.

The two 13-year-old girls and a 12-year-old girl were injured in Kamsack, Sask., Monday night. One with the most severe burns was taken to hospital in Regina, although all are expected to recover.

The girls were sitting in a car outside one of their homes when the explosion happened, a few blocks from the local RCMP detachment.

"The members that were on duty here ... could actually hear it," Staff Sgt. Greg Nichol said. "They described it like it felt like a semi had rumbled by the detachment."

The community has had problems with propane inhaling — or "huffing" — in the past, but it seemed to have dropped off until recently, Nichol said. "We just recently had been hearing that some local kids had become involved in it, and were experimenting with it, or doing it, and I guess it's probably been confirmed in this incident last night," he said.

The explosion blew out the car's windows, and sprayed debris five metres away.

"I saw the car. The girls are pretty lucky they weren't hurt worse, I'd say," Nichol said.

Children involved in this activity typically steal propane tanks from backyards, so people should be on the lookout for any suspicious activity, Nichol said.

Even at that age these children should be a bit smarter than that.

Can someone explain for me what the difference of "whippets" and "huffing". I only heard of "whippets"when Demi Moore was hospitalized for it and yet it seems to me that these children were doing the same thing as this adult was doing.

whippets are nitrous gas ( think ballons filled with nitrous or the gas used for compression in whipped cream bottles, there are many ways nitrous can be inhaled) huffing is well.... inhaling paints and other chemicals/ gases. the difference is whippets are exclusively nitrous.

okay...correct me if I am wrong....huffing is the act and whippets is just the type of inhalant?

Jig JOnes your a sad sad person...You must be sheltered. There are many social issues that exist in all parts of our countries...You love to point out things about people that have problems...Humans aren't livestock...They dont breed...But the bigger problem is the need to "get HIgh". Too bad the people have to escape reality. What are the underlying reasons why they feel the need to escape. Those are the things that need to be looked at. (as someone said erlier)

“two 13-year-old girls and a 12-year-old girl”

Can you read? These are very young children we are talking about here. Any attitude like this BS, “Some people will do anything to get that 'high' regardless of what you do to try and stop them.”, is not required. What is required is to get to the bottom of the problem and deal with it. Help these poor kids out before it’s too late. And I will tell you what the best part of the problematic situation is laziness. So simple you say. Well, just look at it. The self indulgent society we live in. There is very little sense of family to speak of these days. There is not the close association that was a matter of yesteryear. We are all to busy with our trivial lives to care about what’s right under our noses and that is a lot of frustrated, lonely children from not only the family or extended family unit but from society itself. Maybe we could use just a little more nurturing society moved forward with just a little less social ignorance and self indulgence.

Some people will do anything to get that 'high' regardless of what you do to try and stop them. Remove access to known drugs and they'll find another way, usually as in this story, a far far more dangerous way... marijuana, in the light of this story, doesn't seem quite so bad does it? I know if I had a child I wouldn't want them doing drugs period, but if they are absolutely determined, I'd much rather they smoked some pot then huffed propane... and your stupid if you think restricting propane will solve anything, they will just huff something else.

Sad and disturbing as this incident is, I just have to note that my first encounter with the term "huffing" was on the Huffington Post.

Would you be kind enough to state your point? I cannot fathom where you are going with that leading sentence.

Seems to me that he has never heard of the term "huffing" until he read this article.

there going to have to ban propane at the reserves, they tried with alchohol and now whie guys and girls are getting rich selling drugs and booze to reserves in northeren canada.
10:59 PM on 05/08/2012
Maybe we need to do away with the reserves altogether... Segregating people might have been a good idea a few centuries ago, but fast forward to 2012, there ain't much positive coming from them.

Welcome to Kamsack, a town rich in history and filled with promise.
The lands around what is now Kamsack were originally settled in the 1880s by a handful of agricultural settlers. The farming area around Kamsack was well settled by 1905. These farms consisted of a variety of ethnic groups which are still present to this day. Doukhobours, Ukrainians, Europeans, Americans and Eastern Canadians were all among the early settlers to the area.

I don’t think this is a reserve. But you can check out this address and see for yourself.

Now this is what makes this story even more puzzling. This seems like a situation that would have a lot more social infrastructure to possibly help circumvent these sorry circumstances from happening and that includes anywhere!

THe thought that you would need to teach someone not to inhale propane is mind boggling. HOw uninformed can you be?

Mister man: People are not born with innate knowledge. Cockroaches are born with instincts. We have to be taught. Some catch on, some don’t. Who taught you not to sick your hands into the fire? Nobody.

I cried like a baby after reading this. It told me how ignorant we are as Canadians, that we would let our children blind, maim or kill themselves for lack of the simple knowledge of a basic science. The three R’s are great. But, if WE don’t teach our children well (Thank you, Neil.) Science, how will we as a nation ever be able to look at our collective self in the mirror?

Inhaling propane is a dangerous stunt *(it works like drowning by depriving you of oxygen) and instigates a semi-near death experience.
Adding fire and flammable explosive gas is insane, and results in a very painful real death experience.

It is sad to note, but kids need taught that these things are dangerous, especially in communities where such substance abuse is prevalent.

And instead of dealing with the problem... we'll most likely build them a basketball court...

Actually, even building a basketball court would be a positive step in these communities. It would give kids something non-harmful to do instead of resorting to substance abuse.

But the effects of various substance abuse situations needs to be taught in schools, and at a surprisingly young age to even begin curbing the problems.
