OTTAWA - Don't eat when you drive — at least not from a china bowl.

A 58-year-old Ottawa man is facing a $490 fine after a provincial police officer spotted a driver eating behind the wheel.

Police say the driver had a white china bowl on his lap and was eating rotisserie chicken as he drove with his knees and grabbed the steering wheel occasionally.

OPP say an unmarked police vehicle was passed by a car Tuesday evening on Highway 417.

Police say the car was observed speeding, weaving outside of its lane, following too closely and changing lanes without signalling.

Michael Gibson was charged with careless driving.

Yeah most people have eaten or drank while driving... but driving with your knees while using both hands to eat is beyond ridiculous. I can see taking sips from a coffee that sits in a cup holder, or occasional bites from a donut that you can set down on your centre console if necessary or whatever... But a plate of food in your lap for which you need both hands is as dangerous as talking on the phone while driving (which has been proven by multiple independent studies to be at least as dangerous as driving drunk). This guy should have been charged with impaired and lost his license temporarily.

Doing something that stupid deserves more than fines. How about losing his drivers licence and if he is caught driving without one he gets time in jail and a fine?

Hah, I tried eating chicken while driving with my knees but it was too hard to grease-finger my phonecalls at the same time, so now I stick to burgers or tacos in the ol' mobile office.
