Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson Arrested In Germany; Will Be Extradited To Costa Rica

FRANKFURT - A controversial environment group dedicated to protecting marine mammals says its Canadian leader has been arrested in Germany.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says Captain Paul Watson was arrested in Frankfurt over the weekend and will be extradited to Costa Rica on an outstanding arrest warrant.

The Sea Shepherd says in a statement that the arrest warrant stems from a 2002 incident involving a Costa Rican vessel illegally hunting for shark fins in Guatemalan waters.

On Twitter late Sunday, Watson tweeted: "I am currently being held in Frankfurt on charges from Costa Rica. Court appearance in the morning."

The group says while the Sea Shepherd boat was escorting the Costa Rican vessel back to port, a Guatemalan gunboat was dispatched to intercept the group’s crew.

According to a statement on the group’s website, the crew of the Costa Rican vessel accused the Sea Shepherds of trying to kill them, "while the video evidence proves this to be a fallacy."

The Sea Shepherd says their ship later encountered a Costa Rican gun boat, the crew of which has accused Watson of attempted murder.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was formed in 1977 and has had a controversial history.

The group sends vessels to confront the Japanese fleet each year, trying to block them from firing harpoons at whales.

The group’s tactics have drawn praise from supporters and vehement attacks from critics.

According to Sea Shepherd, Watson is being assisted in jail by European Parliament vice-president Daniel Cohn Bendit and European deputy Jose Bove.

"Our hope is that these two honourable gentlemen can set Captain Watson free before this nonsense goes any further," Sea Shepherd said.

I remember when Paul had to scuttle his vessel, Sea Shepherd, or give it to the Sierra, the Farley Mowat, Seized by Canadian Coast Guard, and the Ady Gil, rammed by the Shonan Maru No. 2, and unrepairable. Paul Watson, is actually a great, inspired, man. Without him, many innocent animals would have been harmed. I know he is protesting Japanese and Faroe Culture as well as many other cultures. Conservation is important. One of the things he did not get on video is the scuttle of the Sea Shepherd. We have nostaliacs and critics and everyone has their opinions.

Paul Watson and his crew have somehow manged to combine hippie-dippy with thuggery (although Charles Manson and his family did it first). I don't like whale hunting, but I don't like that crew and their "captain", either.

A few here are stating that the SSCS have everything on film. Here is some histoy about Paul Watson and his video. In a 1965 film, Les Phoques de la Banquise, by the Artek Film Company fishermen were hired to skin seals alive for the camera. Paul Watson and Greenpeace new about this and did nothing (even though last year he and the SSCS offered an award for those found shooting at sea lions. In fact they used the video!!! A formal hearing on this incident was held in the Canadian House of Commons in 1969. Testimony under oath proved that the hunter in the film was hired by to skin a live seal without first rendering it unconscious. These groups use video to promote their own cause and nothing else. As recently as 2012 the HSUS selectively edited video of the east coast seal harvest to give the impression that seals were still being clubbed and left to suffer on the ice.

IF PAUL WATSON IS NOT QUICKLY RELEASED THEN A BOYCOTT OF THEIR COFFEE & ALL TOURIST TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA WILL BE NECESSARY!!!

As stated by Paul Watson himself most of SSCS donations come from young people who are blinded by "Whale Wars" and old folks. Most can't afford to travel and many do not drink coffee.....

You are living in a right wing 'paradise' already--a virtual 'depression' resulting from their greed/boom/bust policies--enjoy!

Ten years and they are just creating a hub-bub about this? Uhm, methinks that some money changed hands to get this 'incident' acted on and Paul arrested.

Watson's big mistake was being effective. Why not just extradite him to Guantanmo? It's more to the point than pretending its Costa Rica has a beef. Wait till these memos are released.

Paul Watson...one man's hero is another man's terrorist.

When Americans declared their independence from Britain, those who supported the Crown saw the rebels are terrorists and anarchists.

C'est la vie.

Gosh, put him in a jail!
11:31 AM on 05/14/2012
Too bad there isn't some way to take away Watson's Canadian citizenship. What an embarrassment to his country ... my country. While I am sympathetic to his goals - sort of, his methods make him no better than a pirate.

When authorities do not do the right thing, it is up to individuals to do the right thing. Otherwise nothing would have changed in thousands of years. there would be no christainity either. You need to think through this. Your grand children and their children need this earth.

If people did the right thing, Christianity would NOT be around. We should honor this man and his crew.

What exactly has Paul Watson done to deserve exile? He may be self aggrandizing and a bit of a blow hard, but he is doing what he believes in. Nobody else stands up for the sea and its inhabitants like Mr.Watson and they desperately need humans to stand up for them.
Sure, he is a pirate, but aren't we pirates too when we go and pluck more than we need from the sea without any care for its health?
I hope Mr.Watson has a fair and balanced trial in Costa Rica and receives what he is due. And when it is all done I hope he comes back to Canada and will continue be a totem for our oceans.

"A controversial environment group dedicated to protecting marine mammals" Really? It always seemed obvious to me that the Sea Shepard Society was dedicated to the self-aggrandizement of Paul Watson. Oh my, how could I have been so wrong?!!

Temporary setback surely. It points out the need for an eventual successor, though, as with all charismatic and competent leaders.

Not surprising news. The guy has been going around looking for a fight for decades. He makes good money from his activism. A water based equivalent of the humane society.
