A Moose Jaw man is in police custody after throwing bricks at officers from an apartment rooftop before falling four storeys down a chimney.

It happened Saturday morning on the 100 block of High St. West, downtown.

Police were called after receiving a complaint of a suspicious man on a roof.

At first, they couldn't see him, but then someone started throwing bricks at the officers on the ground and on the fire escape.

Police negotiators tried to talk to the man, but he climbed into the chimney and fell four storeys to the ground floor.

Stuck at the bottom, the man cried out for help. Police were able to talk to him through a small vent on the chimney.

Police, fire fighters and an ambulance crew were able to get the man out.

He received only minor injuries, police said, adding that when he was apprehended, he was carrying a small sword.

He was taken to hospital.

The man, whom police say suffers from mental illness, is facing charges of mischief to property and assaulting a police officer.
