VANCOUVER - When hang glider pilot William Orders set out to take a young woman soaring through the skies over scenic British Columbia last month, his goal was to give her an "amazing adventure" and "lots of smiles."

Instead the 50-year-old acknowledged he "failed in a major way" on Monday, just over two weeks since Lenami Godinez-Avila, 27, plummeted to her death.

Orders delivered a short statement in his first public appearance since getting bail in connection with a charge he attempted to obstruct justice into the investigation by swallowing a memory card.

"I want so much to relive that day and to have it turn out differently," he said of the accident in a statement obtained by The Canadian Press.

"I will be left with the events constantly going through my mind, and that I will have to endure forever. Please believe me when I say I am sincerely and deeply sorry."

Orders was arrested two days after the April 28 accident, and remained in custody for another week while police and lawyers waited for the data disk to pass through his system.

RCMP say the disk may contain footage of what happened from the video camera that was aboard the glider.

"I would like to apologize to Lenami's family, to the police and the public for my panicked action of swallowing the memory card as I did," Orders said.

He said his impulsive behaviour was triggered by "overwhelming stress" that included the presence of his 12-year-old daughter on the field, where the tandem flight was supposed to land.

"I disclosed to the police myself shortly afterwards what I had done with the memory card," he said.

"From that point on I offered my full co-operation in ensuring the retrieval of the card."

Orders said he now realizes his actions caused the tragedy to drag out unnecessarily for the woman's family and friends, which he regrets.

He also apologized for bringing negative attention to the hang gliding and para-gliding communities. He said the true intention of his business what to introduce new people and pilots to "the sport which has been my passion for nearly 20 years."

"I have concluded that I cannot and will not return to hang gliding," he said.

The man's lawyer, Laird Cruickshank, said his client did not take any questions after reading his statement. Orders is due back in court June 18.

The man is a fully certified pilot who has competed in hang gliding competitions around the world.

Police have said they will attempt to view the footage on the memory card, and see where the evidence leads their investigation.

Godinez-Avila's boyfriend purchased the gliding adventure over B.C.'s Fraser Valley to celebrate their two-year anniversary. He was watching and waiting for his own turn when the woman tumbled loose.

Her body was found about eight hours later.

He made a full recovery but ended up with a steel rod thru his femur and a metal plate in his forearm. The problem was that he dropped his left wing and failed to correct. The "anti dive" feature of the hang glider pulled the glider out of the dive, making the accident less serious than it would have been otherwise.

A tragic accident that for me reinforces the fleeting fragility of life and a reason to hug those you love most, frequently (and often) as one simply never knows when that last hug will occur.

This whole story is tragic beginning with the death of a young woman, the pain caused to those who knew her, and the pilot who inadvertantly played a part.

Undoubtedly a tragic accident, but as the Pilot in command he is entirely responsible for her safety and wellbeing and he knows the "buck stops with him".
Momentary panic makes people do silly things and it was right for him to "fess up" to the police. The harness and equipment will tell their own story and it is probable it was just incorrectly fitted and ajusted on the victim and in a freak combination of circumstances and forces she fell out of it.

Those involved in Aviation know that only careful systematic checks carried out every single time can keep such accidents to a bare minimum and most pilots with decades of experience can tell of people who were careless but seemed to lead a charmed life and others who were normally meticulous and careful but made one simple human mistake which bought about a tragedy.

Simpletons will dismiss the opportunity to take lessons from this tragedy and easily pass judgement on very limited facts on those involved. Wiser people will carefully study official enquiry outcomes and recommit to applying those lessons already learned along with what is yet to come to light.

Capt. Lamplugh's great quote from the thirties was never more appropriate. "Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect." Just so!

"Police will attempt to view the footage" - what's taking so long? It's been a couple weeks.

Stomach acid and a trip through the bowels. I would assume some degradation of the card. The police will have had to send it to a computer forensics lab.

My stress reaction is also to swallow inedible items that could possibly contain evidence.

Do you really, really expect the jury to swallow your story, mister. You better 'fess-up, and tell us exactly what happened.! We'll forgive you. But for your own good, you got to do the time,
and learn something about your stupid self.!

You're just going to sit there and criticize the parrot? Have you no shame? Herman Cain? He had shame. He withdrew from the presidential election. Why? Because he was being attacked by people like you - communist supporting left wingers.

Gee...I wonder what was on that disk that he had to swallow it so quick before the ground investigators and his 12 year old daughter saw it... and this "Vow" to "never fly again" - hmmm- well, this isn't a boxing match where someone died accidentally from an inadvertent act... so the sympathy factor is decidedly lacking and rightly so, let's see the disk first, and what the Investigators say happened.

Having his daughter witness the tragedy ...panic & stress cause a 50 yr. old guy to swallow a data card?

Explain the thought process that would produce this action..sigh

I guess he of the crowd that figures it better to ask forgiveness rather than permission..or cooperate with authorities ...

If you had just accidentally caused a woman to plummet to her death in front of you, do you think that you would be in any sort of rational state of mind? I don't think anybody can assume that they'd know how their brain would react to a situation like that, it's probably pretty impossible to process right away.

I think it's pretty silly to assume guilt, when everything else (witnesses saying he tried to hold onto her with her legs, the fact that he DID cooperate with police fully) points towards that not really being the case, and he seems quite sincerely sorry.

I concur. It would be a horrific experience for anyone capable of empathy. He will relive this over and over till the day he dies. I am sad for all those involved.

If in fact it was he who informed the police about his actions, I can't condemn him. He ultimately did the right thing. And he will have to live with it for the rest of his life.

Terrible tragedy.

Best wishes for the pilots 12 year old daughter and the victims family and boyfriend.

i agree...so many people quick to rush to judgement on this guy and what happened....so easy to play armchair critic when you're not there and not having the thoughts that he did (of his daughter too)...regardless, he's probably now a broken man, even if he does time and gets out in yr or so...or pays a civil lawsuit....what a heavy lifelong penalty to weigh on your heart.

'so many people (are) quick to rush to judgement on this guy',
'even if he does time and gets out in (a year) or so...or pays a civil lawsuit.'

Sounds like you're the one rushing to judgement.
Most likely this will be ruled Death by Misadventure.
