Baby Boy Critical After Being Found In Pond

A baby boy was airlifted to a Toronto hospital after being found in a backyard pond in Mississauga Thursday.

Peel Regional Police say the 10-month-old was without vital signs when he was removed from the pond just after 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

"Our fingers are crossed that he’s going to pull through," said Const. Fiona Thivierge. She said the boy's parents are "in a terrible state of mind and praying to God that their child pulls through."

The child remained in critical condition on Thursday evening.

Police are investigating how the child got into the pond, which they described as a small decorative garden pond, the type that often contains fish.

Thivierge said the incident illustrates the care parents must take to keep small children away from water.

"[Children] can move quickly and it doesn't take much for a child to drown," she said. "If you have a small pond like this one in the backyard, take the time to put a small fence up."

Shame on the parents for not having a fence up protecting the child from the pond. and where were they when this happened? You've got open water in your backyard...What were they thinking?
Fate has stepped in - hopefully the parents have learned a lesson from this and that the child pulls through.

my prayers go out to the family, I have young grand children and can only imagine what this family is going through - the baby was found alive which proves that God or a highter power - is in the picture - I hope the baby's condition continues to improve.

Hope this little one is going to be okay. Not saying the parents are bad parents BUT they should have been paying more attention to him. Tragic things happen in a split second. Raising 2 boys I know how fast they could get out of your sight. But never did they go near water without someone watching them like a hawk. Please have a little compasion for this parents. They are in great pain as it is not knowing about their little ones future. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

The CDC has some good safety tips:

We call these waterfeatures in the states...Who leaves a baby alone with anything with water in it.... think they need to teach people to become parents.. I don't know what happened, but this shouldn't have.

About a week or so ago, this happened to a 15 month old baby...again, it was a garden pond in the parents yard. They were doing some yard work and the toddler disappeared...either my husband and I were paranoid or just lucky that this stuff didn't happen to our children. Of course, we didn't have a pond in the yard (neither did any family members) and we made sure that at least one of us had an eye on our kids at all times!! I don't blame the parents, sometimes stuff happens no matter how careful we are. I pray for these babies and their families...

My previous house had a pond when we bought it, but I felt it was a bad idea with a toddler, so we filled it in. They can move so quickly, literally while one is rubbing one's eyes. Hope this child recovers.

10 months old, really, not even walking good. Sad very sad, where where the parents they need to be held accountable for this one.

Not going to criticize, I am a grandmother of 3, my son lives on a farm and when I am there I never sit down. He is always asking me, "Mom why do you worry so much?" Hope he reads this

how long did it take them to notice the child was missing?

Blame is easy to throw....I have two little ones, ages 2 and 3. Not long ago I was going out to the driveway to put them in the car to pick their sister up from school (I live in a subdivision with just one entrance in). I always put the younger one in first since she is more likely to wonder in the 45 seconds or so it takes to strap in the car seat. Well, I turn around to walk my 3 year old to her side and my hear sank. I called her name, looked around bewildered as to why she wasn't right there..well she (as I later discovered) wondered quickly to the other side of the road to see a kitty...I spotted her, and literally just then a furniture delivery semi truck starts up our road, she made eye contact with me and realized she wasn't where she should be and started running back to our side of the road. I didn't have time to scream and tell her to stop. Thank God the large truck stopped on a dime. This entire situation lasted less than maybe 2min. Don't judge parents, or grandparents..."freak" accidents can and do occur. Sorry for the book, but it bothers me when people make quick assumptions or accusations. Now, there are plenty of parents I would throw the book at for more obvious issues...

Is there a barrier that keeps you from placing both children into the vehicle at the same time while you strap on in, close the door and you walk (alone) to the other side and strap in the older one? Just asking...there are no freak accidents. There is always a method of prevention if people are willing to take the moment and think about it. There are parents who under pressure to hurry take liberal shortcuts and this is when things happen. I remember walking with a group of friends while we were still in university, in the market and these two women (sorry but they were far from women as my friends and I conceived after this incident) who were walking and talking with two children. The boy was probably about 6 years old and the little girl about 4 or 5. (to be continued)

do you have kids ( i wont assume you do or dont ) but if so you know it only takes a second of turning your back sometimes for something to happen

We were coming to a part of a partition in the road where the cars, more often than not will come speeding by and try to stop before hitting anyone trying to cross this small section of the street. Anyways, these "women" were paying absolutely no attention to the kids, they were checking themselves out in the store and restaurant windows as if they had no cares or responsibillities in the world. While these broads were being self centred my friends and I were watching the little girl who was just happily walking and talking to herself enjoying the day carring her dolly. We watched and talked about how these women were behaving and seeing that the little girl was getting awfully close to the end of the sidewalk we picked up our pace.

Your story may be infuriating to your memory, but it has no bearing whatsoever on this family and this baby boy. Cast no stones, Karma doesn't take holidays.

How many more times will a child's life be lost because parents have no common sense? Pools, ponds, buckets of water no emptied. ALL of these things are killers of toddlers! Come on! If you are going to have children , do the one thing that can save your child's life....THINK!
Damn.

You know NOTHING about these parents, or how this child ended up in the pond. You would do well to remember "Karma" is a B**ch. I have a 2 1/2yr old Grandson, who started walking at 10 month's, and even though he is "Autistic" he learned quickly how to open door's AND unlock them! Everytime he stay's the night I sleep with one eye opened. From chain lock's added to entry door's too locking bathroom door's from the inside, I am still terrified that I will awake one morning to find he has figured out how to get out of the house, or God forbid unlock the bathroom door. Yes, I'm paranoid, because anyone with COMMON SENSE knows that you can do everything by the book, and still find yourself in the kind of nightmare this family is now going through!
