Tax group wants to eliminate GST on gas

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to stop charging GST on top of federal and provincial gas taxes.

“At one time Stephen Harper’s Conservatives were committed to ending the unethical practice of charging the GST on the entire price of gasoline, including provincial and federal gas taxes. We’re hoping he still feels the same way,” said the group's Alberta director, Scott Hennig.

This is the 14th time the CTF is holding its Gas Tax Honesty campaign before the May long weekend. Hennig said it serves as a reminder that over 21 per cent of the price at gas pumps are taxes.

He went on to say his organization’s research shows that in province’s with lower taxes, consumers truly are saving more at the pump.

“The evidence is clear: lower gas taxes mean lower pump prices,” said Hennig. “Don’t let politicians fool you into thinking that cutting gas taxes won’t result in relief at the pump.”

The CTF held its campaign on Thursday in Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Halifax.
