Baird Not Prepared To Extend Afghan Mission 'At This Time'

CBC  |  Posted: Updated: 05/22/2012 10:37 pm

While the head of NATO wants Canadian soldiers to stay in Afghanistan past the end of their training mission in 2014, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister says he isn't ready to commit to that just yet.

In a public statement last Monday, NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, "I appreciate very much that Canada provides trainers for our training mission in Afghanistan, and I hope Canada will be in a position to continue that contribution also after 2014."

However, in an interview with host Evan Solomon airing Saturday on CBC Radio's The House, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said he and Rasmussen "haven't talked about it yet."

"We've been there for more than 10 years. The Canadian Forces have done a fantastic job in their training mission. They've paid a heavy price in their combat mission," Baird said.

"I'm not prepared to commit to any more than that at this time."

While Canada isn't currently considering an extension of the mission, Baird told Solomon there has been a request for financial assistance and development aid from Canada.

Baird confirmed "those are things Canada is considering."

Anti-war protesters rally in Toronto

Dozens of anti-war demonstrators picketed Saturday across the street from the U.S. consulate in Toronto to condemn NATO talks on the future of the Afghan mission ahead of the NATO summit in Chicago, which begins Sunday.

The NATO mission in Afghanistan is expected to be centre stage when leaders from 60 countries gather to discuss the war in Afghanistan and other international security issues.

The protesters said they're afraid that leaders at the summit will approve a plan that would keep foreign troops, including Canadian forces, in Afghanistan longer than originally scheduled.

"Rather than be a strong supporter of the occupation, I would like to see Canada strongly opposed to the U.S.-Afghan strategic partnership agreement," said Ali Ibrahimi of Afghans for Peace, one of the groups involved in the rally.

"I imagine a Canada that can be successful, be affluent and have influence in the world without the need to support injustice, to support people dying. So I would like our government to leas."

The demonstrators urged Ottawa to call back the soldiers now deployed on a training mission to the war-torn nation.

Several protests have already taken place in Chicago ahead of the summit, but the main one is set to coincide with the start of the meeting on Sunday.

So far, they have been largely peaceful. One man was arrested during a march on Friday, and three others were arrested in a raid on an apartment this week.

The three are accused of making Molotov cocktails in preparation for the summit and are being held on terrorism conspiracy charges.

Globalization will keep on going until we realize that peak oil has come and its not going to get any cheaper. in a hundred years our country will have nothing to do with afghanistan or most of the world. abandoned trucks & cars unable to drive...

ferraris and porsches all got abandoned in dubai. When the oil is gone, the people making the money from it will go, and we will be a pretty hurting place. I did not get into the occupy movement but there is the 1% taking advantage of the entire planet for intense profits. Do we need Nato? Nope the world needs to grow naturally and not have nuclear and other weapons holding it into check.

Baird; "I'm not prepared to commit to any more than that at this time." So the question is raised about the future. Having raised the trail balloon to commit for longer and it didn't fly at the moment, Baird and Harper are biding their time to see if there is another "moment" which is propitious to extend the mission Of course, it all depends on the pressure exerted by the Americans to "cover" a quick exit when the roof falls in.

War is disgusting and I have never been in favor of it. Canada is an aggressor. It is waging a war in someone else's country. No 'civilized' country can ever be justified in doing that.

George Bushes brother cancelled the insurance policy on the world trade towers 2 months before they got "hit by planes". Liquid metal found under the rubble only indicates explosives. Your damn right we should not have been there in the first place. America is so in debt it cannot function without a war.

Absolutely stay! Let's continue this failed mission. What's a few billion dollars and a few hundred casualties when we can continue to prove what everyone already knows, that nobody has ever won a war in Afghanistan.

The only thing NATO can still do in Afghanistan is give the Afghani government some one to blame other than themselves. Regardless of where you stand on this war, that national government is corrupt, opportunistic and unreliable. This was unwinnable from the start. Just like the American experience in Vietnam, the ground rules imposed always prevented a victory. The best we could have hoped for from the beginning, was an armed stalemate long enough for the non fundamentalist population to establish some success and power. Had that come to pass then the deaths of all our soldiers might have had worth and meaning but that stability isn't going to happen now. Short of nuking Pakistan and taking over completely, there is no hope for any resolution. Once again, history has been ignored and repeats itself.

This is a setup.

Baird and Harper will do whatever they are told by their American masters.

Everything else they say is pure window dressing.

This will be a good test for Harper. He'll be told by his handlers in Washington to stay despite Canadian desires to leave and his own promise to do so. I think he'll fail. I expect that for 'strategic' and 'humanitarian' reasons Baird will announce an extension. Perhaps our troops will be designated as 'tourists'.

In the end perhaps Harper or Baird will come clean about their flip flop and admit to something Homer Simpson said, "I wasn't lying. I was writing fiction with my mouth." Those two do that well, but not as good as McKay.
