Quebec Student Protests: Video Shows Police In Montreal Pepper Spraying Bar Patrons (VIDEO)

CP  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/20/2012 11:19 pm

MONTREAL - Quebec's student movement gained some high-profile supporters over the weekend in the fight against tuition fee increases as anger mounted against a new law aimed at curbing violent protests.

In a gesture that sent the online world into a frenzy, Montreal's Arcade Fire wore the movement's iconic red squares during an appearance with Mick Jagger on Saturday Night Live.

Twitter erupted with questions about the meaning of the fashion statement, while student backers praised the move.

"Arcade Fire musicians wear red squares on live TV while singing with Mick Jagger," read one tweet. "Quebec student strike is going global!"

The star activist and filmmaker Michael Moore also gave his support to the students, featuring links about the issue prominently on his website.

"Their uprising is inspiring," he tweeted to over a million followers. "One of the most amazing mass protests of the year."

The international hacker collective Anonymous took an interest as well, releasing two videos denouncing the legislation and the planned tuition increases.

The group, which regularly hacks into government websites around the world, warned of future actions against the Quebec government.

"Resistance is futile," a computer-modulated voice stated in one video. "The hour of war has come."

The website for the Quebec Liberal party and the province's Education Ministry were down for portions of the weekend in an apparent cyber attack. Anonymous didn't claim responsibility.

The newfound support came during a weekend marked by clashes between protesters and police. The unrest reached a climax in a bonfire of plastic traffic cones and construction materials lit during a melee on a busy downtown street.

Meanwhile, police came under criticism over an altercation caught on video that shows patrons on a bar patio getting pepper sprayed.

Surveillance footage, played in a loop Sunday on one of Quebec's all-news stations, shows several people sprayed by riot police at close range. Customers are seen scrambling to get inside the bar as a police officer knocks over tables and chairs.

Another video from a local TV station shows the officers took action after one was hit by a flying chair. The chair was then flung back toward the patio.

The bar owner said police went too far and he's considering taking legal action.

"People were falling on each running inside to get away from the pepper spray, breaking things, and then people left by the back exit," said Martin Guimond, who runs the Saint Bock brasserie in the city's lively Latin Quarter. His waitress was initially going to call 911 after it happened.

"And then she said, 'But wait, it's the police that are doing this,'" Guimond recalled. "That's when you realize there's a total loss of security."

Police didn't return a request Sunday for comment about the incident, which occurred only steps from where the fires were earlier set.

Police were newly armed with Bill 78 for the weekend protests. The law passed last week lays out regulations governing demonstrations of over 50 people. It includes requiring organizers to give eight hours' notice for details such as the protest route, the duration and the time at which they're being held.

The City of Montreal also adopted a new bylaw that threatens protesters who wear masks with heavy fines. But it failed to deter dozens of protesters from wearing masks Saturday on Sunday night, and police said they would use the new law with discretion.

The legislation was intended to restore order and put an end to three months of student protests, but it appears only to have given the movement momentum.

Demonstrations were held again Sunday, including a rowdy evening march for the 27th night in a row.

It remains unclear to what extent police will enforce the new law — or whether they even can.

Montreal police appeared to take a tougher stance on the weekend than previously seen during the nightly marches. The march was almost immediately declared illegal on Sunday because, police said, they weren't provided with a protest route and projectiles were thrown at police.

Police took swifter action Sunday than the previous night, using sound grenades in an effort to disperse the crowd about an hour after the march started.

Thought that this bar might be close to the fire that was set. Most of the people around that fire look like drunk kids just waltzing out after last call and looking for the next trick, or Canuck fans after being bounced from the Stanley Cup finals. Opportunism.

Oh and if you throw a patio chair at the cops, or if you are hiding people who have set fires in the streets, expect the fight to come to you. Who created the war zone; the punks that set a traffic cone fire in the middle of the street because protesters gave them cover or the police trying to restore order?

In the interest of ensuring the public be kept informed I submit the following:
The owner of said bar was invited and accepted to be interviewed on TVA's Le Négotiateur with one M. Claude Poirier. During this interview this same bar-owner admitted that clients on his terrasse inserted themself into the situation by attempting to hide and protect an individual who had been involved in the fire set on rue St.-Denis.
Viewers of this show were also informed that the owner of this bar-Terrasse was one of only
25% of bars in the area who declined to co-operate with Police when asked to control the activities of the patrons on their property.
The owner of this bar also confirmed to M. Claude Poirier that the video he had provided to the media represented only a portion of recorded activities........
Viewers of this show were sure to note a substantial change in tone and substance from this bar owner.
It could be said that "il était moins gros dans ses culottes ce matin".

now its become a struggle for democracy, this has the potential to get ugly, time to stop consuming all types of taxable items , smokes gas beer oil cell phones cable mortgages and best of all its not illegal, but a few million people not buying into the need for these things will make a difference, and it takes more than 60 days to forclose on a mortgage in arrears. the police attacking patrons at a restaraunt is a new tactic in garnering public support, and i don't think its gonna work out very well

you probably do not have a job and pay taxes for these hoodlums to go to school with the cheapest tuition rates in north america. at a raise of $300. a year for five years their tuition will still be the cheapest in north america. if you had the brains to watch the video you would see someone throw a chair at polic and also they were hiding a creep who helped set a fire on ST. Denis. They got what they deserved..

What about the bar patrons that had nothing to do with the protests?, did they get what they deserved, what about the bar owner who's bar recieved damage because of the police causing a stampede through his business, not to mention all of the customers checks that went unpaid due to the forced dine and dash. This story is about more that the students tuition fees, it's about the government turning montreal into a police state. If everybody isn't outraged when our freedoms are taken away, that's when we will lose them, Thinking this new law will only affect the hooded thugs, is very short sighted, as can be seen by this video of regular Canadian just out for a drink at their local bar.

And here is exactly how it works: neolibralism withers every aspect of the State except its authoritarian apparatus. The police, which are the putative enforcement arm of the State's will, are called into the service of the corporate interest through the proxy of a legislative body that now shows its own illegitimacy because it is divested of its concerns for the people.

This is how it goes, and it will only continue to go badly until the government backs down. There are two forces, the sedentary force on the wrong side of history, and those who protests mark the beginning of a new existence. Hold the street my friends! Protest, your voices will not be silenced.

"Will you really declare Martial Law?"
"Just watch me!"

I don't think Harper will go that far because he realizes that his hold in Quebec is too tenuous to jeopardize the seats he has there in the next Federal Election. There needs to be bold action in this to quell the protests and calm the province.

Alberta has fine universities. And ditch-digging is an honorable profession, except to a liberal/socialist/elitist.

Now fetch me a coffee, and make it quick.

I wonder if the G&M pending paywall has anything to do with it? Will this website's comment forums suffers the same fate?

How any website continues to legitimize a cacophony of illogical hate is beyond me. It used to be that real moderators got rid of the flamers. Like why I got rid of TV. Got rid of radio.

All the cons all the time and their propaganda is successfully destroying a once prosperous country, using hate-media America as a template. I know it can be unrelenting and thankless. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time with your comments. Have a nice Victoria Day. Cheers.

It's sad that a lot of people posting comments are for police state. Even if you don't agree with the protestors or their cause, you should agree that they have a right to protest. I don't agree with anti abortion demonstrations, but I do think they have every right to protest. I don't agree with the Tea Baggers, but I do think they have a right to protest. If people here are so willing to let the government take away the right to protest just because they don't support the cause, what happens when it is a cause they support? The problem in the world today is not civil disobedience... it's civil obedience. We bend over and allow ourselves to be proverbially butt raped while the government uses us in wars, panders to mega corporations, and does not look out for the best interest of it's citizens.

We've become a society of apologists for Democratic Authoritarianism - delegating politics to political and economic elites instead of a true popular democracy. The fact is that the current ruling generation has gone all rosey eyed with the comforts brought by keynesian socio-economic policy. Us young folks won't have this illusion when we work crap jobs to pay into their crap pensions.
