Cyclist dragged beneath truck fighting for his life

Montreal police said a cyclist is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a transport truck and run over at the intersection of de Lorimier and Ontario streets.

The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Simon Delorme said the cyclist and the 17-metre tractor-trailer were both headed south on de Lorimier when the cyclist was hit.

"He passed under the wheels of the truck," Delorme said.

The truck driver, apparently unaware he had struck the cyclist, a man in his early 20s, continued for several blocks.

He was stopped by police on Notre-Dame Street East near the intersection of Iberville Street. The bicycle was still caught in the undercarriage of the trailer, between the double set of wheels.

Delorme said the cyclist did not appear to be badly hurt, however it appears he went right under the wheels of the truck and sustained critical injuries.

The cyclist is in hospital, where authorities fear for his life.
