Toronto police evacuated an area around Royal York Road, north of Bloor Street West, after a car struck and severed a gas main Wednesday afternoon.
Police say just after 3 p.m. a vehicle driven by a man in his eighties rode up on the sidewalk and struck a gas line, causing a “hissing” sound.
No injuries were reported but police set up a command post in the area.
A Twitter message from the Toronto Police said Bloor Street West was evacuated between Willingdon Boulevard and Montgomery Road.
Police also asked residents and business owners in the area to close their windows and turn off any intake of outside air into their buildings.
The intersection of Bloor Street West and Royal York Road re-opened to eastbound traffic just before 4 p.m.
