SLAVE LAKE, Alta. - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have reached out to residents of Slave Lake, Alta., noting their strength one year after wildfires destroyed one-third of their town.

William and Catherine sent a letter to the community expressing their greetings and best wishes.

"One year on from the disastrous fire that ravaged your town, Catherine and I send you, the people of Slave Lake, our heartfelt best wishes, in the hope and knowledge that through your fortitude and unquenchable spirit the recovery of your beautiful town is progressing well," the prince wrote in a letter postmarked St. James's Palace.

The royal couple toured the devastated town last July.

In their letter, Will and Kate also say they remember and admire how the town met this great challenge of nature.

The Town of Slave Lake has posted the royal letter on its website.
