LUNENBURG, N.S. - Nova Scotia's education minister says she does not support a moratorium on school closures.

Ramona Jennex turned down the request for such a ban during a meeting with District of Lunenburg Mayor Don Downe Tuesday in Halifax.

Downe says he was hoping for a moratorium because three schools have been closed in the municipality.

Those schools are now the municipality's responsibility — something Downe says is "grossly unfair."

The provincial government has defended cuts to education, saying they are necessary in the face of declining enrolment in recent years.
