TORONTO -- Shares of Research In Motion were down more than three per cent in early trading after the BlackBerry maker's head of global sales resigned.

Patrick Spence leaves his position at the company as RIM heads into the crucial period leading up to the launch of its new line of smartphones later this year.

RIM's stock was off 34 cents to $11.03 in morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Spence had worked at the company for 14 years, having a hand in the BlackBerry's meteoric rise to one of the world's best-selling smartphones.
