City considers revitalization of Exhibition Place

The chair of the Exhibition Place board of governors, Coun. Mark Grimes, says exploratory talks are underway about revitalizing the waterfront park.

Exhibition Place is a large, prime piece of land along the waterfront which many say is under utilized.

Grimes says the Exhibition grounds may look like a vast parking lot now but he and others at city hall are talking about how to make use of it in the future.

"There's lots to be done there," said Grimes "There's lots of balls in the air for Exhibition Place."

City officials says they've been working on a plan for months that would bring shopping, restaurants and theatres to the area — maybe even relocating the city's clubland district to the grounds.

Grimes says he's heard these ideas but says the key may be the casino being pushed by the province.

"You have heard MGM talk about spending $4 billion in our city with a casino being five per cent [of that amount]? What's the other 95 per cent they are talking about? Shops and restaurants," he said.

Right now Grimes wants to focus working on a joint plan with the province to develop Exhibition Place and the recently shuttered Ontario Place at the same time.
