Dozens in St. John's show support for Quebec students

Harbourside Park in St. John's was alive with sound of banging pots and pans last night as more than 30 people gathered to show support for Quebec students who are fighting planned tuition increases.

The St. John's protest coincided with the 'pots and pans concerts' that are being held in Quebec to protest Bill 78 – provincial legislation aimed at controlling protests in that province.

"We're here to support the Quebec students, but it's much larger than that. The pots and pans are part of the student movement, but it's also definitely against law 78 and the restrictions on people's civil liberties and civil rights," said St. John’s protest organizer Elizabeth-Anne Malischewski.

Quebec's Bill 78 would make it illegal for 50 or more people to protest without police permission.
