Toronto police say they were attempting to stop a vehicle on a downtown roadway when one of its occupants tried to get away on foot, ditching a handgun along the way.

The man was in a vehicle that police observed was driving erratically on Wednesday morning in the Lake Shore Boulevard and Rees Street area.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it kept on driving until it ran into heavy traffic.

When it stopped, a man fled the vehicle and discarded the weapon and “a quantity of drugs,” and was soon after arrested.

Police say two other men remained in the vehicle. They managed to get moving again, hitting two vehicles in the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway as they sped away.

The vehicle was found abandoned in the Leslie Street and Lake Shore Boulevard area. Police are still looking for the two male suspects who had been travelling with the man who was arrested.

Jameal Johnson, 29, faces 14 charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or prohibited ammunition and failing to comply with probation.
