Woman killed in hit-and-run in Longueuil

A woman in her 50s was killed on Wednesday evening in a hit-and-run in Longueuil, Que.

The woman was struck by a GMC Sierra truck that was exiting a Couche Tard gas station at Vauquelin Boulevard and Chambly Road. She was on the sidewalk when she was hit at about 6 p.m. ET.

"Unfortunately, the woman died despite the fact that she was quickly taken to hospital," said Martin Simard, a Longueuil police spokesperson.

"Immediately after the impact, the individual — the suspect — left the scene. Thanks to a good description from several witnesses, we were able to get to his home and arrest him," Simard added.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and faces a charge of failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily harm or death, Simard said.

The maximum penalty for a conviction is life in prison.

Accident investigators were at the location on Wednesday night to try to re-create the incident to determine how it happened.
