Coast guard saves swimmer stranded on buoy

The coast guard had to rescue a stranded swimmer Sunday in Sarnia.

Just before 11:30 p.m., three men went for a late-night swim in the St. Clair River near Rainbow Park in the city's south end.

After swimming approximated 90 metres offshore, one of the men couldn't swim back and climbed onto a buoy.

Sarnia Police Const. Heather Emmons hinted that the decision maybe saved the swimmer from injury or worse. But she also said it was against the law.

"The St.Clair River is known for its strong current in certain parts and can quickly overwhelm the most competent of swimmers," Emmons said. "Also, people should respect private property and stay off it."

No one was injured. All three men were given tickets for trespassing.
