EDMONTON - Environmentalist David Suzuki says Alberta should include the cumulative effects of pipeline leaks in the province-wide monitoring its developing.

Suzuki made the remarks after delivering a speech to a public health convention in Edmonton.

He says it's foolish to imagine a pipeline system will ever be leakproof and the long-term consequences of those inevitable failures need to measured.

His statements came after the most recent pipeline leak in Alberta, which saw nearly a half-million litres of oil released into the Red Deer River.

Suzuki says Albertans have reason to be skeptical about the information they're getting from industry and the provincial government.
