3rd harbour seal dies during transport to U.S.

Officials in London, Ont., confirmed Wednesday that a third harbour seal from a local theme park has died in the United States.

Storybook Gardens had arranged for its four harbour seals to be permanently relocated to the Saint Louis Zoo.

However, the City of London announced on Sunday that two of those seals — Nunavut and Atlantis — had died en route to their new home.

A third seal, Cri Cri, was under “around-the-clock emergency care” at the Indianapolis Zoo for several days "after developing problems" during the same trip. However, the animal died Wednesday.

John Riddell, the manager of Storybook Gardens, said the park and its staff were “deeply saddened by the news of Cri Cri’s loss.”

Dr. Jeffrey Bonner, the president and CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo, said staff offered their “deepest sympathy to the staff of Storybook Gardens and to the citizens of London who clearly loved these seals.”

The cause of Cri Cri’s death is not yet known.

Peanut, a fourth seal that was being transported south of the border, arrived at the Saint Louis Zoo safely.
