Boats collide in Vancouver's English Bay

One person has been rescued after an anchored 14-metre pleasure boat collided with a 21-metre sailboat moored in Vancouver's English Bay early Wednesday morning.

The pleasure craft, moored not far off Kitsilano Beach, dragged anchor in strong gusts and large waves and was swept against the neighbouring sailboat, which was also moored offshore.

A lone person aboard the smaller boat managed to scramble to safety as it took on water. It is believed no one was aboard the anchored sailboat.

The Kitsilano Coast Guard was on the scene quickly and has since towed the pleasure boat to False Creek.

The incident comes only weeks after the local boating community voiced its concerns over controversial plans by the federal government to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard base.
