Fire destroys Roncesvalles pet food store

Fire destroyed a pet food store on Roncesvalles Avenue early Monday morning.

The owner of the store lived in the upstairs apartment and escaped uninjured.

Toronto Fire Capt. Mike Strapko told CBC News that 40 firefighters responded to the call at the Kennel Café.

Four cats died in the fire, but firefighters were able to revive three others, using a special kit that has an oxygen mask designed for animals. A dog also survived the fire.

Strapko said fire crews have had the kits for about two years, but have rarely needed to use them.

The damage from the blaze estimated at $130,000.

Strapko said it is believed the fire started in a closet.
