Charge laid after toddler dies in artificial pond

Toronto police have charged a homeowner with criminal negligence causing death in connection with the death of a two-year-old Scarborough boy.

The toddler died in hospital this afternoon after his mother found him next door in the homeowner's artificial pond on Tuesday.

The boy was pulled from the backyard pond on Carrying Place, near the intersection of Finch Avenue East and Markham Road, at about 10:20 a.m.

While he was initially taken to a local hospital, the boy was transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children, where police say he was declared dead just before 3 p.m.

Sriranganathan Ampalam, 58, faces one charge of criminal negligence causing death.
