A Mississauga mother has appeared in court on a second-degree murder charge that was laid nine months after the death of her young daughter.

Peel Regional Police say that three-year-old Niyati Jha was brought to a Mississauga clinic on Sept. 20, 2011.

The girl was assessed and transported to the Hospital for Sick Children in critical condition, where she was placed on life support.

She died the next day. Police say her death was the result of “serious injuries to her head and brain.”

A subsequent investigation led to charges against the girl’s mother.

Nandini Jha, 35, was arrested Monday and appeared in a Brampton court on Tuesday morning.

A bail hearing is set for July 5.
