Camps criticized for boy robotics, girl beauty classes

Summer camps that offer beauty and dance for girls and robotics and bugs for boys have come under criticism in Charlottetown.

The CARI complex on the UPEI campus has relaunched its summer camp offerings this year. In addition to swimming and boating camps, CARI is offering a slate of camps in July aimed specifically at boys or girls.

For the Guys features bugs, robotics and Lego. For the Gals offers dance and beauty. Ann Braithwaite, co-ordinator of Women's Studies at UPEI, was surprised by the gender stereotyping in the camps.

"I can imagine the sort of difficulty it takes for a seven-year-old boy to look at a course called For the Gals that's all pink and then say 'I really want to do the dance course,'" said Braithwaite.

The website of the CARI Complex said all camps are open to any participants who would find the curriculum fun and enjoyable.
