An unusual accident at a prominent construction site has resulted in one arrest and one wrecked car.

Early Tuesday morning a man drove a car into the hole at Union Station where workers are remodelling the transit hub.

It appears the driver was making a left turn from University Avenue on to Front Street West at about 3 a.m., when he lost control of the car and drove through a barrier and into the hole.

Police say it was a drop of more than three metres.

There were three people in the BMW at the time. All three apparently escaped uninjured — managing to get out of the car and run away.

The driver of the car, who is in his 20s, was found nearby and taken into custody.

Police suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident.
