Suspected overdoses in Edmonton leave 1 dead, 4 in hospital

One woman is dead and four other people in hospital after overdoses at a party Sunday afternoon.

“There were five people in this suite, all five ingested a drug that is unknown at this time, and all five have been affected,” said police Insp. Brian Nowlan.

Police say the woman, who was in her mid-20s, was the one living in the apartment complex around 120th Street and 106 Avenue.

Of the four in hospital, two women remain in critical condition, while two men are considered stable.

Carmen Thomas lives in a condo on the same floor. She said she saw the ambulance arrive at the building just after 4 p.m.

“I saw one girl come out, she didn’t look very good. I saw two males come out, they seemed kind of disoriented, really out of it,” said Thomas.

She said the group had been partying earlier this weekend, at times running down the halls of the building and yelling. Thomas believes that three women lived in the apartment, but it isn’t clear if they are the same people who were taken to hospital.
