MONTREAL - Bell Media has applied to the CRTC to convert TSN Radio 990 in Montreal to a francophone station, RDS 990.

The decision by the Bell Inc. (TSX:BCE) division to convert the station results from Bell's acquisition of Astral Media (TSX:AMC.A) earlier this year.

It aims to reconcile the acquisition with guidelines of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission governing ownership of multiple stations in a given market.

With a continued focus on local sports, RDS Radio 990 would be an extension of the RDS brand in Canada. As a 24-hour all-sports francophone radio station, RDS Radio 990 would provide comprehensive coverage of the Montreal sports scene, along with analysis from RDS sports experts and Insiders.

Und the arrangement, English-language broadcasts of the Montreal Canadiens hockey games would move to Astral's CJAD 800, pending CRTC approval.

Le Reseau des sports, begun in 1989, is a French-language network offering a comprehensive lineup of sports programs ranging from hockey and football, to baseball, soccer, motor sports and others.
