Vancouver police have detonated blasting caps and a vial of liquid suspected to be nitroglycerine that were found at a home under renovation in Vancouver.

About 50 blasting caps and the vial were discovered by construction workers on West 17th Avenue near Ontario Street on Tuesday.

"Officers in the VPD Explosives Disposal Unit safely removed the old blasting caps and liquid from the 100-year-old home and destroyed them in the alley using a controlled detonation," police spokesman Const. Lindsey Houghton said in a release Tuesday night.

Traffic in the area was blocked off for hours as police dealt with the situation.
