Sleeping driver strikes Gatineau pedestrian

A pedestrian was seriously hurt after he was struck by a van in Gatineau, Que., when the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The man, 24, was walking on the sidewalk of Alexandre-Tâché Boulevard when the collision happened Sunday afternoon.

Police say the driver fell asleep and the vehicle drifted on to the sidewalk striking the man.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police had earlier pronounced the man had died.

Passengers in the vehicle were treated for shock but they were otherwise uninjured.

There is no word if charges would be laid.
