Lifeguards fired for texting on duty

Two lifeguards caught texting on their cell phones have lost their jobs.

The lifeguards were working at a beach in the Bois de l'Île Bizard park, west of Montreal.

Their photo was published on the cover of a Montreal newspaper and was shared widely on Facebook.

Quebec Lifesaving Society director Raynald Hawkins said lifeguards should only be on their phones in the case of an emergency.

He said lifeguards are trained to know that a drowning can happen during a brief moment of inattention.
