ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador has announced $3-million to launch a colon cancer screening program.

The Health Department says the program will be phased in over a three-year period, with the first phase being implemented in western Newfoundland.

Health Minister Susan Sullivan says the goal of the screening program is to reduce provincial mortality rates through early detection.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the province, next to lung cancer.
