Barrie police have called off a search for a missing girl at Johnson's Beach after determining that the children who reported her missing were mistaken.

Two young swimmers said Wednesday afternoon they'd met a friend in the water, who then disappeared.

It prompted a search involving at least three boats and sonar equipment until a mother called police to say the description of the missing child fit her daughter, who was at home and OK.

Police say the girl swam out from the beach, waved at her mother and then swam back to shore underwater.
