Olympics opening ceremony underway in London

The opening ceremony for the Games of the XXX Olympiad is under way before a packed house of 60,000 people in London.

Viewed by her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the expected three hour affair is featuring a show produced by Oscar winner Danny Boyle, plus about 10,000 athletes.

Canada is due into the stadium around 10 p.m. ET as part of the parade of nations.

Britain’s long history was featured in the show’s first section, beginning with a pastoral scene in a medieval meadow along the Thames River, and then moving to the Industrial Revolution and its effects on the working poor.

Included was a spectacular set that created an entire foundry, including massive smoke stacks.

Boyle then threw a number of historical elements in simultaneously, including both World Wars, the Beatles, immigration and the growth of railroads.
