Canada had some early setbacks in Day 1 with swimmer Ryan Cochrane being knocked out of contention in the Men's 400m freestyle and the Men's 8 Rowing Team faltering in their initial heat and needing a top four in the repechage to qualify to the final.

China's Yi Siling did not falter and earned her country their first gold medal of these Games in the Women's 10m air rifle.

The home team, Great Britain, was disappointed as cycling hopeful Mark Cavendish was unable to secure a medal in the men's road race.
