LONDON - World champion Aldo Montano went out of the Olympic men's saber individual on Sunday after losing 15-13 to Italian teammate Diego Occhiuzzi in the round of 16.
The fourth-ranked Montano battled back from 11-5 down to trail by just one point at 14-13 before Occhiuzzi closed out the victory.
Defending Olympic champion Man Zhong of China also failed to reach the quarterfinals. After edging Kim Junghwan of South Korea 15-14 in his opening match, Zhong was beaten 15-10 by Aron Szilagyi of Hungary.
Top-seeded Nicolas Limbach of Germany had two comfortable wins to reach the last eight.
Montreal's Philippe Beaudry was eliminated in the round of 32 to Dmitri Lapkes of Belarus.
