Puvirnituq, Que., man dies in police custody

Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec’s major crimes unit were in Puvirnituq, Que., over the weekend to look into a death in custody which happened sometime on Friday night.

Agent Pierre Tremblay, a spokesperson for the SQ, said the 39-year-old man may have taken his own life.

He said the major crimes investigators have since returned to Quebec City, and Kativik Regional Police officers remain on duty in Puvirnituq.

He said the man in question was awaiting a court date, and had promised to abstain from alcohol. The man’s family called police to report he had been drinking.

A cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
