Canada's Milos Raonic has been eliminated from the Olympic tennis tournament after an epic four-hour long tennis match against France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Tsonga beat Ontario's Raonic 6-3, 3-6, 25-23 and will earn a well-deserved break.
The match broke the record for the longest Olympic tennis match, with the third set stretching just over three hours. Raonic, ranked 23rd in the world, was the clear underdog against 6th-ranked Tsonga.
Tsonga let out an empathic scream after his game-clinching overhand volley some four hours after the second-round match began. The match even inspired some hilarious commentary on Twitter from journalist and Olympic watchers around the world.
"At this rate NBC will be able to show the conclusion of the match live and not on tape delay," joked Gord Millar on Twitter.
Preliminary matches in Olympic tennis only go three sets rather than the usual five sets in international competition. The Tsonga, Raonic match is a far cry from the epic 2010 battle between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner at Wimbledon. That one lasted 11 hours and five minutes and took 138 games.
