A 28-year-old Nanaimo, B.C., man has been charged under Canada's Criminal Code for possession of a grenade launcher.

Nanaimo RCMP say Dustin Derreck Pacheo, 28, of Nanaimo was charged on Thursday with the unauthorized possession of a firearm and the unauthorized possession of an explosive device.

After RCMP officers received a tip that weapons were inside a room at a hotel on Terminal Avenue in Nanaimo, a tactical police unit burst into the hotel room and recovered an 18-inch grenade launcher on Wednesday morning.

Police arrested a woman in the hotel room and arrested another woman who was with Pacheo when police found him nearby on Comox Road.

Launcher's origin unknown

RCMP Const. Gary O'Brien said the two women have been released without charges laid and without charges pending.

Police are still trying to piece together how the grenade launcher ended up in the hotel room.

O'Brien said officers have met with representatives of the Canadian Forces and confirmed that the launcher was not part of their weaponry.

The launcher also did not show up in a search of police databases of stolen items, O'Brien said.
