Police confirm woman was shot during Okanagan chase

The 19-year-old woman who was injured during a violent high-speed car chase through the Okanagan is recovering in hospital following surgery for gunshot wounds, but police have yet to confirm who shot her.

The New Westminster Police Department says West Kelowna RCMP exchanged gun fire with the suspects, and confirmed the woman was shot. But they did not say if the bullet came from an RCMP-issued gun, or one held by one of the suspects.

The New Westminster Police Department is in charge of investigating the force used by RCMP involved in the wild shootout and police chase on Tuesday.

The woman was with two men in West Kelowna when someone in their vehicle allegedly shot at a West Kelowna RCMP officer and then fled.

The trio then led RCMP on a wild car chase from West Kelowna up a winding lakeside road to Swan Lake near Vernon, B.C.

After an alleged carjacking attempt, they were finally stopped by police with a spike belt. The two men were taken into police custody and the woman was taken to hospital.

On Wednesday, Southeast District RCMP revealed the two men, aged 32 and 39, are now being held on outstanding warrants while charges are considered in this latest incident.
