WINNIPEG - Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has called a byelection in the constituency of Fort Whyte for Sept. 4.

The south Winnipeg seat became vacant this week when former Tory leader Hugh McFadyen (mick-FAH'-din) stepped down as an MLA.

Longtime politician Brian Pallister was acclaimed as the new leader last weekend.

Nominations for the byelection will officially close Aug. 20.

There are currently 37 New Democrats, 18 Progressive Conservatives, one Liberal and the vacancy in the Manitoba legislature.

The New Democrats have already nominated Brandy Schmidt as their candidate.

Schmidt works for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada as manager of community engagement.
