A 19-year-old man was driving a GMC Envoy in the wrong direction when he struck a Dodge Caravan, carrying a family of three, on the Queen Elizabeth Way ramp connecting the eastbound QEW to Highway 427, according to police.
Police were called to the scene just before 3 a.m.
The 49-year old father who was driving the van was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old daughter who was in the back seat was also pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Sgt. Dave Woodford, the 50-year-old mother in the van was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash.
Woodford said the family in the minivan was from Toronto and were likely on their way home when they were hit.
Police have placed the 19-year-old under arrest for impaired driving. He was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital with serious injuries and is under police supervision.
The roads re-opened in the mid-morning. But they were closed for hours as police investigated and crews cleared the vehicles from the scene.Suggest a correction
