Should Christine Sinclair, captain of Canada's women's soccer team and its most decorated player, carry Canada's flag at the Olympic closing ceremony on Sunday?
Canadian Olympic fans online and on twitter have been rallying support for the soccer star. They've even created the hashtag #SinclairForFlagBearer on Twitter.
Lets recap her accomplishments at the London Games. She steadied the Canadian women's soccer team through a tough round robin and quarterfinals. Then was seemingly unstoppable, scoring three goals, when she played against the United States in that heartbreaking 4-3 semi-final loss. Her six goals at these Games ties an Olympic record.
Throughout her career she has been the symbol for women's soccer in Canada. A sport, that after today's bronze medal win, has a legion of new fans and admirers. Her 143 international goals puts her in the top 3 women soccer players all-time and she's won a number of honours as a college soccer player in the United States.
She's drawn comparisons to Gretzky and the Globe and Mail's Jeff Blair compares Sinclair to Mark Messier and Mario Lemieux, three sports leaders Canadians are more familiar with.
Canada's athletes have given us many compelling performances at these Games. Toronto's Rosie MacLennan soared her way to a gold medal. Canada's Brent Hayden persevered and can count himself among the world's best in the 100m freestyle.
"In any sport, any event. No one else has jumped up and stolen the show, charmed a country, amazed the world, had the mighty Americans frozen in fear, the way Sinclair did in her Monday night soccer match of misfortune against Team USA," the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons writes of Sinclair.
The Province's Steve Ewen describes her performance in that game against Team USA more succinctly, "It was all hustle and heart. It was everything we want Canadians to be known for."
We saw her performance. Roared when she scored those goals. Shared, in some small way, in their disappointment. And we couldn't agree more. Sinclair for flag-bearer. Let's make it happen.
